  • Apple to use OLED screens in new iPhones next year: Sources
Apple to use OLED screens in new iPhones next year: Sources Shift to new screens are an opportunity and challenge for suppliers TAIPEI Apple is planning to use organic light-emitting diode displays in all new iPhone models, starting in the second half of 2018, according to two industry sources. One said that Apple is tentatively looking at releasing three new models next year. The U.S. gadget maker did not respond to an email seeking comment. Apple has started designing new iPhones for release in 2018, but its plans are subject to change. Sources in the OLED production equipment industry suggest panel makers may not be able to produce enough to meet demand if Apple uses OLED displays in all its new iPhones in 2018. This year, Apple will use OLEDs only in its premium handset, which will offer a high screen-to-body ratio without its trademark home button. The two other models will continue to sport liquid-crystal displays, and these are expected to remain on the market into early 2019. Taipei-based Yuanta Investment Consulting said shipments of new iPhone models in the second half of 2017 will reach 90 million, half of which will be OLED handsets. OLEDs provide a sharper color contrast than LCDs and are bendable. If Apple's 2018 plan is implemented, OLEDs will almost certainly become the mainstream display for higher-end smartphone brands and their top-range handsets. SAMSUNG WINS BIG That shift will mark a major triumph for Samsung Electronics and its Samsung Display unit, which have invested heavily in the technology over the past few years. In 2016 alone, Samsung's capital spending on display technology reached 9.8 trillion won ($8.43 billion). Samsung released its first smartphone with an OLED display in 2010. Since then, OLEDs have become a key feature in Samsung's high-end smartphones. Last year, Chinese smartphone brands began using OLED displays in their premium products. Samsung monopolizes the global market for OLED smartphone displays, and it will be the sole screen supplier for Apple's premium handset this year. The company said it expects its OLED business to see higher revenue in 2017. On July 4, the South Korean conglomerate said in a statement that Samsung Display is reviewing plans to establish a new OLED manufacturing site in Asan, South Korea, by 2018. Samsung Display declined to comment on its sales to Apple. It is unclear whether Samsung will remain the exclusive OLED supplier in 2018, even though its rivals are still struggling to churn out OLED panels for smartphones. Apple usually prefers to have more than one supplier for its components. The Korea Herald reported on July 3 that Apple is mulling investing 2 trillion won to 3 trillion won in LG Display to help foster development and production of OLED panels. Earlier, market watchers had suggested Apple was likely to help LG Display improve its OLED capabilities. LG Display declined to comment on plans for cooperation with Apple. LG Display, together with Japan Display and Foxconn-controlled Sharp, supply LCDs for the current generation of iPhones. IMPLICATIONS While LG Display may be getting a helping hand from Apple, Japan Display and Sharp face a more uncertain future with respect to their iPhone panel business. The two companies are trying to forge ahead with their display technologies, but it is unclear when they will be able to make OLED panels for smartphones in large quantities. Japan Display and Sharp will continue to see demand for smartphone LCDs, although they may need to target the lower end of the market. Both companies will still be able to supply LCDs for older Apple handsets next year and well into 2019, although demand could fall with the arrival of OLED iPhones. Chinese smartphone makers will also need LCDs for midtier and entry-level products, as OLEDs are more expensive and supplies are still tight. A Sharp spokesman declined to comment, while an executive said it was not likely that Apple will be using OLED screens for all new iPhones next year. A Japan Display spokesperson also declined to comment. Sharp's parent company may still stand to benefit from Apple's new direction. Foxconn, also known as Hon Hai Precision Industry, will be the sole assembler of OLED iPhones this year. Foxconn's superior manufacturing capabilities give it an edge over its smaller rivals going into 2018. Among iPhone's current panel suppliers, Japan Display appears to be the one that will face the most trouble next year, given Apple plans for OLED handsets. Business with the U.S. company accounts for more than half of Japan Display's revenue. Nikkei staff writers Kensaku Ihara and Cheng Ting-fang in Taipei, Kotaro Hosokawa in Tokyo, Kim Jaewon in Seoul, and Emi Okada and Natsuko Katsuki in Osaka contributed to this report

  • Samsung turns to LG as supplier of LCD panels
Samsung turns to LG as supplier of LCD panels Rare deal between rivals could lead to further collaboration SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics will procure liquid crystal display panels from LG Group, the first full-fledged partnership between the two longtime South Korean rivals. LG Display will soon begin supplying panels 40 inches and larger to Samsung, a source close to the panel manufacturer revealed Thursday. LG is expected to provide panels for about 700,000 LCD televisions by year's end. Samsung is said to be willing to expand procurement further. Samsung produced about 47.4 million flat-panel TVs in 2016, taking the world's largest share. In large LCD panels, the company ranks second, trailing LG. The two competitors have had hardly any deals in electronics. The collaboration comes after Sakai Display Products -- an Osaka Prefecture company jointly run by Sharp and Hon Hai Precision Industry -- decided late last year to stop supplying LCD panels to Samsung. Samsung appears to have procured 2 million to 3 million panels from Sakai Display in 2016. Increasing procurement from Chinese suppliers was not enough, prompting Samsung to approach LG. Samsung and LG could broaden their partnership to cover high-performance products such as lithium-ion batteries, said an analyst at KB Securities. Samsung and LG are fierce rivals. After the global financial crisis, the two conglomerates were spurred by the South Korean government to consider collaboration, which never came to pass. Although both boast a competitive edge still, the industry landscape is gradually changing as Chinese players catch up. Some point out that had the South Korean rivals maintained their momentum, exemplified by their taking market share from Japanese companies, they would not have entered into this partnership. Samsung's shift toward high-margin organic light-emitting diode displays as a profit source is likely another reason for the supply deal. OLED panels have generated roughly triple the profit of LCD panels in the company's display operations. Samsung, it seems, deems it wiser to focus on high-growth businesses while joining hands with a direct rival in LCD panels.
